The professor points out that there are 2 ways how people forget memories. She tells one example that a person is given a phone number and he tries to memorize it, yet he doesn't write it down. Soon he forgets the phone number. The passage realates to the example that the memory decays when the memory is not used for a while. The second example is a personal one of the professor when she went to a book store without a list. She remembered the book titles. She ran into a friend there and started chatting. After the conversation, she forgot the book titles. This relates to the interference of the memories that when a new memory enters the brain, the new mem causes the old one to depart.
